INTERVIEW WITH GIGJA EINARS

When you begin to shoot Icelandic horse? What about your first experience?

I was born and raised on a farm in the western part of Iceland. I have been working as a photographer for many years and I do all kinds of creative photography although with a strong emphasis on horses. I have been around horses all my life and started riding at an early age. It is hard for me to imagine life without horses.  When I was a child my father had an old film camera that I would secretly take and finish the film roll. I would shoot laundry moving in the wind, whalebones on the beach and the little foals running around. Then I would return the camera to where it was usually kept and my father would send the film to be developed without knowing that I had borrowed it.  When he picked up his photos he would sigh and look at me as an hopless case. The photos looked all a little strange to him. Well they were as some would say artistic in an amateur way.

Iceland is really a beautiful and desirable place, in which people’s life is so close to nature. Grew up with herd, is kind of life, we can hardly imagine. Can you describe a little?

Taking long walks and sitting with a horse herd roaming on large pastures close to my fathers farm is one of my favorite things to do. When watching the herd I realized how incredible network of communications horses have between themselves. Since then the behavior of horses has always interested me.  This knowledge and feeling helps me in my photography often to catch the golden moment but also add a mood and a certain feel to the photograph.

Do you have a favorite horse? Or a closest one?

I used to have a horse called Hreimur chestnut with beautiful long mane and eyes glowing with spirit.  Riding him was like riding a race car, he could reach amazing speed in his gaits and I loved him very much.  He was a very proud horse and a little shy, so I always had to approach him very quietly and show him respect, he died few years ago but I dont think that any horse will ever mean so much to me.

What kind of state do you like the best to get alone with horse? Dynamic or Static?

For me to go out into nature and just lay in the grass, alone with  horses and the camera clears my mind completely. I just go into a zen state of mind and I hope people can feel the uniqueness Icelandic nature and horses through my photography.

Pick 3 adjectives for Icelandic horse.

Friendly, pure, unique

I noticed that you go occasionally to bustling city like New York, compared with Reykjavík, which city do you prefer?

I love both, the speed and all the happenings in NY  and the smallness and cozyness in Reykjavik, both have very good coffehouses that I love.

According to a statistic, more than 60% Icelanders study art specialty. Could you tell me how people there live with art?

Icelanders are very creative people, 10% of Icelanders will publish a book in their lifetime, and art galleries and museums abound on every corner. But its hard to life just as an artist, many have a another job and work on their art in a freetime, sometimes people go by their calling and life very low profile life.  Right now the Icelandic government isnt doing a lot for artists, so yes its hard to live a good life as an artist, unless you get famous around the world.

2015 is coming, do have any plans next year?

2015 is going to be very exciting because I have a gallery show do have a show coming up in NY, and will also be photographing a beautiful wedding there.  Im also working on a very exciting project offering photography workshop in Iceland, specializing in equine Photography Tours in Iceland. The plan is to offer guided Photography tours, with spectacular scenery, not to forget one of the purest horsebreeds in the world and hopefully help people to capture many stunning and unique photographs of the horse and the country.

Last one, to talk about China in your eyes.

When I think about china, I see rising empire, beautiful ancient culture...red dragons and lots of people, I think about great teas and marital arts.  I also think about the one child policy and human rights.  I would love to see china with my own eyes and get to know the culture and life of the chinese people.
